Chevy Bolt vs. Toyota Tacoma

May 28, 2020

Making the Connection Turning Soap into Transportation It always bothered Vermont Soap’s founder Larry “the Soapman” that he drove an internal combustion engine to work every day. And so, one chilly morning in January 2020 he finally did something about it and ordered an electric car. By plugging his all-electric Chevy Bolt into Vermont Soap’s 20,000 sqft 150kw rooftop solar array he was able to metaphorically turn soap into transport (read more about Vermont Soap’s environmental mission here)! Here in his own words is a comparison between his beloved Toyota Tacoma pick up truck and his newly found infatuation with…

What’s the Deal With Handmade Organic Soap Anyway?

April 8, 2020

It takes a full month to make a bar of handmade soap. Why bother? In this episode of Organic 201 we will explore the world of handmade, cold process, or poured bar soaps (they are all the same thing); crystal structure, and how the ingredients and manufacturing process create the mildness or harshness of the bar itself. Soap making is the art of taking oils which make you dirty and turning them into soap which makes you clean. But let’s start at the beginning… of human civilization…. As far as we know right now, best guess is that somewhere around…

A brief (but fascinating) explanation of soap crystals

October 18, 2019

Soap is just a crystal that foams.  Who knew?   All soap is a crystal as you now know. Crystals are formed when acids and bases are mixed together under proper conditions. In soap the acid is the organic vegetable oils aka fatty acids. The base is potassium or sodium hydroxide and water. The acids have extra electrons to share. The base is needy for electrons. They bond and form stable structures that are not and acid and not a base. Something new is formed – a soap crystal. Done right no measurable free alkali remains in the product.

June 14, 2019

Worried about your health? The health of your pets, children and the planet? In the end it’s the con in convenience that screws everything up. By the time you cut down the sick and damaged trees (greatly enhancing the health…

Have you considered glass packaging instead of plastic? I hate plastic.

December 6, 2018

Hi Cheryl, We agree. Thanks for asking. Filling up the planet with plastic is a kind of collective insanity we are all waking up to. At Vermont Soap we support buying factory direct in bulk and refilling dispensers. In this way we can minimize packaging, reuse some of the containers, and recycle the bottles after. Glass makes a lovely package. It is very inert and easily recyclable. We have looked at this and concluded that with the added packaging materials and shipping challenges to get the products to you intact, higher shipping cost, higher product cost, increased breakage and added…
