Propylene Glycol – What is it good for?

Is this where you want your skin care coming from?

Propylene glycol (PG) is a derivative of a natural gas that is colorless, odorless, and completely water-soluble. It can be used for a variety of applications depending on the concentration and grade. Products like anti-freeze and brake fluid contain Industrial Grade PG, which can be toxic if consumed. Snack foods and personal care products contain Pharmaceutical Grade PG, which the FDA has put on the “Generally Recognized As Safe” list. How comforting.

Here at Vermont Soap we say “No Thanks” to propylene glycol, even though it would be a cheaper way to produce our Sage Lime Deodorant. Other “natural companies” use PG as a consistency agent for their deodorant – which we suppose is fair since propylene glycol IS from a natural gas source – but it’s not a sustainable resource. There are much more sustainable ingredients available. We use organic coconut oil, organic cornstarch, organic lime oil, organic sage oil and organic beeswax to make our deodorant. It may cost a little more money to make, but it is worth every cent.

Our biggest problem with PG is that can trigger reactions in people with skin allergies and to aggravate eczema, even when diluted. As purveyors of all things organic and good for you, we do not want to use ingredients that are already known for being irritating. Our products are only as good as the things we put into them, so we use nothing but the best.

I like the Sage lime deodorant just the way it is. I have been using it since the first of October. I decised to buy and use the organic deodorant because it has none of the nasties!
I have been waiting all year for soap man to release his new deodorant. Way to go! I’m hooked. Looking for the soap man to make an organic aftershave and hand lotion. Thanks Soap man!
