Should I Be Worried About Aloe Vera?

aloeRecently in the news aloe vera has been in the hot seat. The state of California is looking to add aloe to the list of things that may be carcinogenic to humans. But before you start throwing out all of your natural soaps and beauty products, know this: it’s high-aloein-containing products that may be cancer causing when ingested in high quantities. Read more about the science behind this here and here.

So now the question is: should you be worried about using Vermont Soap products with aloe vera in them? The short answer is no.

The long answer is that we use Certified Organic Spray Dried Aloe Vera Powder. The aloein (which is the suspected possible carcinogen) is removed by filleting and rinsing the aloe plants which are used in production of the aloe vera powder. Since we use Certified Organic Spray Dried Aloe Vera Powder neither Vermont Soap nor any of its brand partners should not be effected if California adds certain forms of aloe to prop 65.

If you’re still worried, The Soapman has answered some common questions below:

What is aloe’s role in the formulation? Why do you use it? What good is it?
Aloe is an excellent anti-inflammatory. We put it into the liquid soap products to counter the harshness that coconut oil soaps inherently have.

What Vermont Soap products don’t have aloe? Any bar soaps?
Most bar soaps do not have aloe in them – only the Aloe Baby and Shampoo Bar do. The Honey Love products, shea butters, balms and salves do not contain any aloe either.

What Vermont Soap products DO have aloe in them?
We use aloe in the shower gels, foaming hand soaps, and castile liquid soap products.
