Organic Wipes?

November 12, 2018

Flushable damp wipes for keeping you and your baby’s butt extra clean are already very popular and becoming more so every day. But how flushable ARE those polyester wipes? And what happens to them after you flush them out of sight and mind? Polyester is PET 1 plastic, and while it may be flushable it does not simply fall apart. They are flushable but they are not biodegradable. After all, this is plastic we are talking about not paper. Even worse these plastic single use wipes are wreaking havoc in sewer system across the country and around the world. According…

Why does Castile Liquid Soap separate and get cloudy?

October 17, 2018

I buy the castille liquid base (unscented) and add water, hydrosol, aloe, and essential oils to it. Eventually there’s a bit of separation (cloudy on the bottom and clear on the top). Do you have any clue why this is happening or how I can correct this? First, try adding the essential oils to the soap and let them steep in for a couple of weeks. You can skim off any EOs that float to the top. The rest should stay in. The slowly stir in the water and hydrosol. This will help. Temperature is usually a factor too. Straight…

Molecules Just Don’t Stay Put

August 8, 2018

Molecules just don’t like to stay put. They’re liable to run off and hook up with the first available oxygen or hydrogen they find sitting on the nearest barstool. Having essentially no weight they are off like a prom dress at the drop of a hat and blown about on the fickle breezes of fate. Molecules, the tiny building blocks of matter; disseminate ceaselessly through space and over time. And that goes double for all sorts of molecules we use to make our lives easier; like pesticides and herbicides for instance.  They just don’t stay put. All life is related…

The North Hollow Diet

May 4, 2018

This blog post was originally published in the Green Energy Times where Larry Plesent pens a column of eclectic whimsy and science titled Ingredient of the Month.   This month’s Ingredient of the Month is….. The North Hollow Diet An answer to “Magic Hot Button Ingredient” Diets Did you ever notice how most diets (like cosmetics and supplements) are marketed around a “magic hot button ingredient”? How to Clean Up Your Oral Care Routine

February 16, 2018

Everybody should brush their teeth twice a day, right? It’s a common practice that was instilled in us as children. But do you know what’s REALLY in your toothpaste? For one, mass market tooth cleaning pastes usually contain sodium lauryl sulfate aka shampoo base. The main reason manufacturers add SLS to toothpaste is not to help make your pearly whites even whiter. It’s to make it easier to fill the tube at the factory and to make the product more consistent when being squeezed out. SLS is a good emulsifier, lubricant and foaming agent, but you might want to think…

Why You Should Steer Clear of Conventional Sunscreen

August 14, 2017

There’s no doubt that sun protection is absolutely essential for a healthy life. UV rays can greatly damage your skin, exacerbate existing problems, and even cause cancer. But what our health organizations fail to tell us is that there are a number of hidden dangers in conventionally produced sun screen that use chemicals (rather than minerals) to block the sun. Here’s why. To start off, the most commonly used chemical in sunscreen is Oxybenzone. It’s considered an endocrine disruptor – meaning that it quite literally disrupts hormone processes in the body. This can cause thyroid and estrogenic problems, meaning it…
