People often ask me if aromatherapy is real. I like to share this story with them: Back in the early days of Vermont Soap, about 25 years ago, we mostly produced handmade bar soaps. We scented the bars with natural essential oils (plant concentrate scents) blended in aromatherapy combinations. One day we took an order for 7500 bars in three flavors: Lavender, Peppermint and Orange. We only had one soap kettle back then so it took three days to make each scent. The first three days we made only Lavender. Everyone walked around yawning and acting spaced out. No one…

Regulation is a somewhat fluid process that changes with input and over time. Nowhere is this truer than with the US organic food regulations to which certified organic processors and marketers are audited to. Just two years ago Washington made it clear that “Made With”, (70% organic) products were to use the “Made with Organic Oils” claim on the principal display panel. They reversed this position last week stating that the phrase “Made with Organic Oils” may only be used if in fact, all the oils in the product are organic. NOP has ruled that there is no difference, for…
Well, it finally happened. After 20 years of railing against Triclosan (tri-chlorine sanitizer) and it’s potentially dangerous side effects, it is heartening to see the FDA step up to the plate and call out this dangerous topical biocide. Triclosan is now being banned in washing products. There are times when you need powerful chemical disinfectants. Open heart surgery comes to mind. But not, NOT for everyday normal use. Reactions to Triclosan range from red, itchy hands and inflammation to long term autism mimicking symptoms. In other words this stuff not only attacks your skin, it has the potential to travel…
