Cubes are NOT just for Squares!

This month’s Organic 201 focuses on an awesome dispensing system for consumer product companies who are not yet set up to ship, receive, scent and fill 55gal (200 kilo) drums.

Five-gallon cubes are 12”x12”x12” reinforced cardboard boxes with a fillable plastic bladder inside. They usually weigh about 40lbs depending on the contents. The bladder securely holds the liquid or gel product and has a spout opening which a tap, very much like a beer tap, is screwed onto. This turns your shipping system into your dispensing system.

Cubes are easy to move and easy to use. They come with a handle for ease of transport and a tap for dispensing. Here’s how you set one up for use:

Locate the 2.5” white plastic cover taped onto one side of your cube. We will call this side the Face. The Face needs to be on top of the box facing up to the sky. Use a sharp knife to carefully cut the tape holding the cover in place. Remove cover and recycle.

Reach in and locate the tap. It’s in there. Remove the tap.

Pull the spout out of the box. Remove the cap and the inner safety ring seal inside the spout.

Slowly screw the tap onto the spout. Holding the spout with one hand make sure the tap is securely fastened. Do not change the position of the on/off lever switch. And do not cross thread the tap.

Now place the cube on its side with the Face towards you and the spout in dispensing position.  Check for leaks.

Five-gallon cubes cost about the same as 4 gallons of Vermont Soap product at wholesale. VT Soap products available in bulk cubes include scented and unscented liquid soaps, body wash gels, foamer soaps, pet shampoo and spray cleaners.

To recycle cut away the tape holding the cube together and remove the bladder. Rinse three times in hot water and recycle. Can also be used for tapping maple trees in spring as long as you get all the soap out of it.
