Nothing I have written has raised as much controversy as my repeated assertion that INTENT, along with natural selection and gradual adaption, is one of the three primary mechanisms of evolution. This month’s Ingredient of the Month explores intent; the guiding force of creativity and possibly even evolution. More than one friend thinks I am a lunatic on this point. Evolution (they patiently explain) occurs very, very slowly, and over vast amounts of time. Superior genetics usually wins out in the end and biology evolves towards increasing complexity over time. I do not dispute these observations, they seem self-evident. What…
Now, before sighing and flipping the page, wait! How much time, energy, and money do YOU spend each year in a losing battle against gum disease? If this sounds like you or someone you know, read on. When you get a sore throat, what’s the first thing to try? A saltwater gargle! Bring a couple of cups of water to a boil. Dissolve about 20% table salt into it. Cool to room temperature. This salt solution makes a safe and effective sore throat gargle, infected tooth rinse, and is a great mouth rinse for sore and bleeding gums. Swish and…
Vermont Soap has been supporting the Teens Turning Green program which helps teach young people about making sustainable choices. Green University – one of the TTG programs – is a 30 day challenge by students all across the world. Vermont Soap received some very touching notes of appreciation from some of the Green U finalists: Dear Kristen, Last month’s Green U was, undoubtedly, one of the most amazing experiences of my life– and I think I can speak for all of the finalists when I say that. After spending a month immersed in the knowledge and resources offered by PGC…
Propylene glycol (PG) is a derivative of a natural gas that is colorless, odorless, and completely water-soluble. It can be used for a variety of applications depending on the concentration and grade. Products like anti-freeze and brake fluid contain Industrial Grade PG, which can be toxic if consumed. Snack foods and personal care products contain Pharmaceutical Grade PG, which the FDA has put on the “Generally Recognized As Safe” list. How comforting. Here at Vermont Soap we say “No Thanks” to propylene glycol, even though it would be a cheaper way to produce our Sage Lime Deodorant. Other “natural companies”…

Founder of Vermont Soap Larry Plesent was interviewed by Debra Lynn Dadd of Toxic Free Talk Radio. They discussed why you shouldn’t use toxic antimicrobials, which products contain them, where you can find antimicrobial-free alternatives, and some toxic free ways to get rid of germs.
I have always wondered why nature didn’t stop with the bacteria. Those kids had it all. They had absolute and complete distribution throughout this blue orb in space we call home. Early bacteria transformed the air from a raging sulfurous stew to the docile nitrogen/oxygen/etc mix we call air. They created the topsoil, a seething battleground where empires are built daily upon the bodies of untold predecessors. And in the process they transformed barren crust into fertile soil for a million future generations. After you’ve conquered and altered an entire planet where do you go from there? If the answer…
Long-time supporter and friend of Vermont Soap Max Goldberg were recently interviewed on Carol Alt’s FOX News program “A Healthy You”. Max discussed the importance of labeling food products that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) so that consumers can know what they are consuming. Click here to watch the interview. Just a few days later, Steven Colbert – from Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” – got a hold of this story and ran with it! Click here to watch the segment. The GMO battle continues! Congratulations, Max, for being a part of the good fight! Max’s website, livingmaxwell.com, is an…
