We here at Vermont Soap have been long-time believers that triclosan is a dangerous chemical and should be removed from products for the general public. Looks like Minnesota agrees! “Although many people have never heard of triclosan, most of us have it in our bodies”, says state senator John Marty, who supported Minnesota’s recent ban of the controversial chemical. The first state to do so, Minnesota’s decision, he says, “adds to the growing pressure on personal care product manufacturers to phase it out”. Read the whole article at TheGuardian.com
This story doesn’t directly relate to soap making or your health, but as conscientious Vermonters, we just had to share: Vermont is taking another step forward to reducing the amount of waste that gets dumped into landfills every year! The state plans to reduce by 33 percent the amount of leaf and yard debris, food scraps, clean wood, paper and other organics from entering the state’s landfill by 2019. The Quirky Iconic Brand is Building a New Factory in Middlebury Middlebury, Vermont – (June 23, 2014) – On June 4’th, a fire damaged Vermont Soap’s certified organic soap factory and destroyed production equipment – but not the spirit of the employees. UPDATED: July 8, 2014 Just after 9pm on Wednesday, June 4th a fire broke out in one of the production areas of our factory. Thankfully no one was in the building at the time, and the fire department responded quickly. The Bad News On Thursday and Friday after the fire we were optimistic we would be able to get back into our offices and shipping area that week and resume shipping soap out to our customers.
