The new California Safe Cosmetics Act requires cosmetic companies to report the ingredients in their products that are considered carcinogens or reproductive toxins. Twenty-two companies filed for “trade secret” status for over 1,500 products, manipulating the system so they don’t have to publish their ingredients. “We understand and respect the need for companies to have trade secret protections for the few select chemicals needed to a product’s competitive advantage, but we do not believe that these business needs should ever trump public health,” [Erin Switalski] said. “It’s just plain wrong that companies are hiding chemicals linked to cancer and birth…
Review and Recommend Winner Julia will receive a Love You Bag, containing: Oatmeal Lavender Bar, Green Gold Unscented Organic Herbal Moisturizer, Honey Love Organic Face Mask, Tooth Salt, and a pocket-sized Organic Shea Butter. REVIEW OF GREEN GOLD HERBAL MOISTURIZER I cannot believe how great my skin looks and feels using this. I was driving home from a yoga class the other day, having used it after my shower. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror on the sun visor, and I thought, “Radiant!! My skin looks dewy and radiant!!” And I am no Spring Chicken, so it’s…
With all of the recent recalls on various pet foods and toys over the past few years, Americans are making moves toward organic and sustainable care and recreation for their pets. Vermont Soap is right on board with this trend, and produces a USDA Certified Organic Pet Shampoo that is a safe and nontoxic alternative to detergent and chemical cleaners. We also make a super-concentrated herbal Hot Spot Oil for our itchy, furry friends. Vermont Soap founder Larry Plesent recently collaborated with an organic online magazine for an article discussing the importance of safe pet care. Read the article in…
The Vermont Soap factory was host to a press conference yesterday for those opposing the fracked gas pipeline that is to be built through Addison County. Larry Plesent, founder and President of Vermont Soap, made it very clear that he believes this is a step backward in Vermont’s progress toward cleaner energy. “By using nature, we can create a sustainable future, but we have to get cracking. Now’s the time to do it,” said Plesent. There are over 90 Vermont-based companies that are part of the movement to revoke the certificate of public good granted to Vermont Gas for the…
After decades of using the same formula, Johnson & Johnson has updated the ingredients in their iconic Baby Shampoo – but not just for the fun of it. Turns out, the chemicals used in their No More Tears shampoo produce an undesirable consequence: two carcinogens, formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane. J&J has been saying for years that these chemicals weren’t concentrated enough to be considered harmful, but an increasingly educated public decided enough was enough. The formula needed to be updated. The newly formulated Baby Shampoo has hit store shelves, but Johnson & Johnson’s problems are not over. Their next task is…
Courtney from Leafygreen.info recently reviewed Vermont Soap’s Organic Sage Lime Deodorant and LOVED it! Unlike other natural deodorants that I’ve tried this one held up way better than the others that just never had the power of mainstream deodorants. What I really love about this deodorant is the short and simple ingredient list. It included all easily identifiable items – coconut oil, cornstarch, lime and sage oil plus beeswax. All of which are certified organic. …something that makes me even happier about this deodorant is that it contains no aluminum or metals of any kind. I was shocked when I…
Many Thanks to everyone who responded to our unofficial Patchouli “Love it or Leave it” Poll on Facebook. Here is our staff conclusion: People either love it or hate it, there is no in-between with Patchouli. Patchouli incense and oil became popular in the early 70’s as high school students began playing around with cannabis and needed something to blame away the new unexpected odors leaking from their bedrooms to their suspicious parents. In those days, unless your parents were jazz musicians it is doubtful that they would be able to recognize the smell of cannabis. I believe “Plausible Denial”…
Molecules are molecules kids! God or Intent or Natural Selection or E.T made our brains out of the same molecules as every other creature that came before us; and that includes plants. Good thing too because we can gather and concentrate plant molecules and use them to enhance our own meager internal supply. That’s why food and medicine work. Cool huh!
Public health experts have been saying for years that antibacterial chemicals need to be regulated. The FDA has finally listened! They announced that manufacturers must prove that antibacterial chemicals are safe by 2016 or they’ll have to pull their products off the shelves. Antibacterial chemicals were originally used by surgeons before an operation to prevent infections in patients, but their use has gotten completely out of hand. Antibacterial chemicals can now be found in all manner of products – from dish soap to baby pacifiers to fabrics – and may be doing us more harm than good. Based on countless…
